Art and Design Intent Statement and Progression Map
Art and Design Intent Statement
At Hipsburn Primary we believe Art and Design is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. It develops children’s creative capacity allowing them to interpret the world around them. Our Art and Design curriculum provides diverse, rich and exciting learning experiences that allows children to connect knowledge, skills and concepts. It shows them the importance of human creativity and it introduces every member of our school community to a wide range of art and artists, including those from different periods and cultures. This in turn creates world citizens with an understanding of how art impacts and enhances societies and our surroundings. We use art and design so pupils are motivated and inspired to be confident, reflective citizens. It is a subject that Hipsburn Primary uses as a means for self-expression, and creative energy, as well as an opportunity to fulfil personal potential. We aim to involve local people and regional organisations as well as the larger community.
Art and Design gives children the opportunity to present their sense of vision through observation, experimentation and illustration. Through our progressive scheme of work and themed whole school projects, they build on prior learning and are taught the skills and techniques in mark making, drawing, painting, print making, sculpture and textiles, with increasing mastery. Children are encouraged to use their growing knowledge and skills to take risks, experiment and initiate their own work. Our pupils are given the opportunity to use their imagination with a wide range of media such as pencil, paint, ink, fabric, clay, paper, wood and recycled materials.
Manipulative skills are developed as well as an awareness of colour, texture, design and dimension. Children study the work and techniques of a range of diverse artists and research art forms from other cultures.
Children are encouraged to reflect and critically evaluate upon their own work and that of others in order to learn from their experiences whilst developing their resilience. We are proud of our Art and Design work at Hipsburn Primary and present our efforts in displays around the school, in assemblies and in the local village during Alnmouth Arts Festival. We want the children at Hipsburn Primary School to see how art can shape the future and to see the potential in themselves as successful artists now, throughout the rest of their education and beyond.
We ensure that:
- All pupils have equal access to a planned, progressive high quality Art and Design curriculum.
- All pupils are given the opportunity to explore great artists and cultures, but also as a means to find their own gift as artists.
- All pupils are provided with opportunities to motivate and inspire the creative skills and abilities.
- We explore and cultivate links with professionals and the community.
